Description
Anthropic is a San Francisco AI company that former OpenAI research executives, led by Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, started in 2021. It is a public benefit corporation, and it released its Claude assistant in March 2023.
Importance
Its founders left OpenAI, which is also in this room, and the two labs became direct rivals. Amazon invested $8 billion in Anthropic in 2023 and 2024. In May 2026, Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, which was higher than the $852 billion valuation of OpenAI in March.
Interesting fact
Skype cofounder Jaan Tallinn led Anthropic's first $124 million round, and Dustin Moskovitz and Eric Schmidt also invested.
