Description
This photograph shows Tim O'Reilly as he interviews Jeff Bezos of Amazon on stage at the first Web 2.0 Conference. O'Reilly Media and MediaLive International held the conference at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco on October 5 to 7, 2004.
Importance
The conference gave a name to the web companies that grew after the dot-com crash, and its theme was the web as a platform. In 2005, O'Reilly wrote an essay that defined Web 2.0 as services that improve when more people use them, such as Wikipedia and Flickr. YouTube, which started in 2005, used the same method with videos from its users.
Interesting fact
At a meeting to plan the conference, Dale Dougherty of O'Reilly said that the web was more important than ever after the crash.
