Description
This robotaxi is an electric Jaguar I-PACE SUV with Waymo sensors and software, and it carries passengers with no human driver. Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover announced the vehicle in March 2018 and planned up to 20,000 units.
Importance
The car comes from a self-driving project that Google started in 2009. Waymo opened its paid service to all riders in San Francisco in June 2024. Like the TPU in this room, the car shows how a long Google research program became a product.
Interesting fact
By March 2026, Waymo gave approximately 500,000 paid rides each week in 10 U.S. cities, 10 times its weekly number in May 2024.
