Description
The M1 is the first processor that Apple designed for the Mac, with eight CPU cores, graphics, and a Neural Engine in one package. Apple announced it on November 10, 2020, with 16 billion transistors on a 5-nanometer process.
Importance
The M1 started the end of Apple's use of Intel processors in the Mac. Apple based the design on more than a decade of work on chips for the iPhone, the iPad, and the Apple Watch. Like Google with the TPU in this room, Apple chose to design its own processor.
Interesting fact
Apple announced its move from Intel in June 2020 and expected a two-year change, but the first M1 Macs came less than five months later.
