Description
The 8080 is an eight-bit microprocessor that Intel released in 1974. Intel made it with an n-channel MOS process, and it came after the earlier Intel 4004 and 8008 microprocessors.
Importance
The Intel 8080 and the Motorola 6800, both of 1974, made the microprocessor a common engineering part. The 8080 was the processor in the MITS Altair 8800 of 1975, the first popular computer kit for hobbyists. Federico Faggin was a lead designer of the 8080 and of the earlier Intel 4004 and 8008.
Interesting fact
Masatoshi Shima, one of the designers of the 8080, first worked on the 4004 as an engineer for the calculator company Busicom.
