Description

Yahoo is a web directory that David Filo and Jerry Yang made in 1994, when they were graduate students at Stanford University. They incorporated the company on March 5, 1995, and the sign shown advertised Yahoo in San Francisco.

Importance

Yahoo grew from a directory into a guide to web content, search, and news, and it earned revenue from banner advertising. Michael Moritz of Sequoia Capital joined its board, and Yahoo sold its stock to the public in April 1996. Larry Page and Sergey Brin later took a similar path from Stanford to Google.

Interesting fact

In December 1996 Yahoo users viewed an average of more than 20 million pages each day.
