Description

Stanford Research Institute, or SRI, is a nonprofit research institute that Stanford started on October 24, 1946. It did contract research for industry and government, and the photograph shows its headquarters in Menlo Park in 2007.

Importance

In its first years, SRI also did studies of industrial economics for clients in Europe and in developing countries. For Bank of America, it designed ERMA, a computer that processed checks. SRI became independent from Stanford in 1970 and took the name SRI International in 1977.

Interesting fact

SRI had no endowment and industry gave it little money, so it accepted government contracts, which the Stanford president did not like.
