Description

In 1951 Stanford reserved 209 acres of its land to lease to light industry and research companies. The area is now Stanford Research Park, and it was one of the first research parks that a university owned.

Importance

The founding grant did not let Stanford sell land, and the university needed money. Frederick Terman also wanted technology companies near the campus, so their engineers could take classes and faculty could consult. Varian Associates, Eastman Kodak, and Hewlett-Packard were early tenants, and by 1960 the park had more than 40 companies.

Interesting fact

The rules let buildings cover only 40 percent of a lot, so the park looked like a campus and not like a factory area.
