Description

Oracle is the database company that Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates started in June 1977 as Software Development Laboratories. The three men worked together at Ampex, and their first office was in Santa Clara.

Importance

In 1979 the company released Oracle Version 2, the first commercial SQL relational database. The company also took the name Relational Software Inc. in 1979, and Oracle Systems became its name in 1982. Oracle sold its stock to the public in March 1986, and in 2010 it bought Sun Microsystems, the maker of the Sun-1.

Interesting fact

Oracle never released Version 1, so the first database that customers could buy had the name Version 2.
