Description
The NeXT Computer is a black cube workstation from 1988 with 8 MB of memory, a magneto-optical disk, and a digital signal processor. The base price was $6,500, and the machine shown is a later NeXTcube.
Importance
Jobs started NeXT in 1985, after he lost his position at Apple. NeXT sold few computers, but Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first web browser and server on a NeXT at CERN in 1990. In February 1997 Apple bought NeXT for $427 million, and NeXT software became the base of later Macintosh operating systems.
Interesting fact
Of the $427 million that Apple paid for NeXT, Apple assigned $375 million to research in progress and charged it as an expense.
