Description

Java is a programming language and runtime that Sun Microsystems announced with the HotJava browser in May 1995. A Java program can run on any computer with a Java virtual machine, and Duke, shown here, is its mascot.

Importance

Java promised programs that ran the same way on IBM-compatible, Macintosh, and Unix computers, without dependence on Microsoft or Apple. When personal computers became as fast as workstations such as the Sun-1, Sun moved its focus from hardware to software. Java was one of the programming products of that change.

Interesting fact

Java grew from Oak, a programming language that James Gosling created at Sun in 1991.
