Description

Hangar One is a steel airship hangar that the U.S. Navy built from 1931 to 1933 for the rigid airship USS Macon. It is approximately 1,133 feet long, 308 feet wide, and 198 feet tall, and its floor covers approximately eight acres.

Importance

Congress gave $5 million in 1931 to build the air station, and the hangar alone cost $2.25 million. In 1939 the government put its second aeronautics laboratory, now NASA Ames Research Center, next to the base. The Navy used the base until 1994, and then it gave the base to NASA.

Interesting fact

In 1931 four Bay Area counties bought the 1,000-acre site for $476,065.90 and sold it to the Navy for $1.
