Excite@Home is the company that At Home Corporation, a cable-modem internet provider, formed when it bought the Excite web portal on May 28, 1999. The sign shown stood at its offices in Redwood City in October 2001.
Importance
At Home paid approximately $7.2 billion for Excite, a web portal like Yahoo, because it wanted to combine web content with its broadband network. The company lost $1.46 billion in 1999. On September 28, 2001, Excite@Home agreed to sell its broadband business to AT&T for $307 million and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Interesting fact
By the end of 1999, the @Home cable internet service had approximately 1.1 million subscribers.
